The Next Decade: Investing in Deep Tech with Global Ambition

July 21, 2025

In this final instalment of our 20 Years of Impact, Innovation & Investment video series, The Next Decade: Investing in Deep-Tech with Global Ambition, we look ahead to the next ten years which will see Pacific Channel build on twenty years of innovation and impact, fuelling the next wave of science-led ventures.

With an expanded team, a trans-Tasman strategy, and a continued focus on investing in the future of food, health and the environment, the next ten years are about going further and faster - while staying true to our mission.

Over the past few years, we’ve seen our approach validated: 11successful exits, high investment returns, and a growing number of companies raising significant follow-on capital, scaling and expanding globally. These results reflect not only the strength of the founders we back but also the scale of opportunity for deep-tech solutions developed in New Zealand and Australia.

But we’re not stopping here. The next chapter is defined by ambition. That means:

  • Raising and deploying larger, multi-jurisdictional funds
  • Expanding our presence across Australasia and into global markets
  • Continuing to invest at the right stage
  • Strengthening founder support through hands-on commercial, technical and governance expertise
  • Staying focused on companies grounded in scientific excellence - with real potential for returns and impact

This vision is reinforced by global trends. Deep-tech now represents nearly 20% of all venture capital investment - doubling its share over the past decade and delivering performance on par with traditional VC. Leading global investors like DCVC and SOSV have shown that science-led investing is not just possible, but powerful.

These shifts are particularly relevant across Pacific Channel’s focus sectors: food, health, and the environment.

Around the world, climate and environmental innovation is accelerating. Investors are backing startups delivering practical, scalable solutions in energy systems, green manufacturing, and low-emissions processes. Food-tech is projected to grow nearly 10% annually to 2030, driven by a range of factors including AI, biomanufacturing, and circular production models. Australia is increasingly viewed as a testbed for ag-tech, while New Zealand continues to produce globally relevant IP in areas like diagnostics, biologics, and sustainable materials.

Against this backdrop, Pacific Channel’s depth of scientific, commercial, and operational experience sets us apart. With more PhDs on our investment team and investment committee than most VC firms in the region, and a strong track record of real returns to our investors, we are committed to backing founders solving meaningful problems through science and engineering.

Our future focus remains clear: support globally significant companies from this region and deliver value beyond capital. That means continuing to invest in ventures that are IP-rich, impact-aligned, and globally scalable - and providing them not just with funding, but with the expertise, conviction, and long-term partnership to succeed.

As this third video makes clear, the opportunity has never been greater. The ecosystem is ready. The talent is here. And Pacific Channel is just getting started.
